BEATRICE - If your feeling a little closed-off from society these days, due to the coronavirus, all is not lost. Take golf, for instance. Although it was quiet early Monday morning at Beatrice Country Club…not so, on Sunday.

"We had one hundred and thirty rounds, which is probably about fifty more than we would have on a really busy day, on a non-virus-related pandemic. Also, the Wednesday we had prior, it was the same way. It's just that people are so cooped up at home, they're sick and tired of sitting at home. Golf's about the only thing you can really do outside that's got social distancing and still gives you some sort of normalcy...and it's been showing, that's for sure".

Add in sunshine and temperatures in the upper 60s, out come the golfers. Beatrice Country Club Golf Professional Seth Ray says even so, the golf course is taking its own precautions to help prevent spread of the virus.

"Golf course-wise, we've taken precautions. On the greens, we make sure people keep the flagsticks in, we have a little PVC pipe we put in the bottom of the cup, so the ball doesn't fall to the bottom and so people aren't actually touching the flagsticks. We took all of the rakes out of the bunkers, because everyone obviously also touches the rakes, to rake the bunkers. Ball washers, water coolers, we've taken all of that out. Carts, we sanitize them all, before and after the rounds. It's been an adjustment for all of us, but at the end of the day, it's for the betterment and safety of everybody".

BCC did postpone men’s league play, which was scheduled to begin this Wednesday. That’s been postponed for three weeks, in hopes that the virus situation has improved
On Sunday, the golf course had a table set up outside the pro-shop….another precautionary step.

"It actually helps a lot now, because it keeps people out of the golf shop, which is another place people can't congregate. So, we kind of do a mobile tee-sheet outside...we're jotting names down as they come in, just checking people in for tee times".

Some Beatrice Country Club events have already been moved from April to August or September. Ray says it’s a wait-and-see approach….everyone holding out hope that the situation will improve. But, he says most understand it could take a little longer than golfers and others, would like.
