NORFOLK - Plans are in place for Norfolk residents to get out of the house and have some fun this weekend by driving around town.

The City of Norfolk, Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, and Norfolk Visitors Bureau are collaborating to put together a curbside cruise event this Saturday. Visitors Bureau Director Traci Jeffrey says the goal is to give residents the chance to socialize with one another in a safe manner while they continue to practice social distancing.

"Just because people are social distancing doesn't mean that they can't still get out and do certain things, as long as they're following the CDC requirements," Jeffrey said.

The cruise will take place from 11 AM - 2 PM, and will give residents the opportunity to pick up curbside orders from many different restaurants and shop at local businesses. Norfolk Chamber of Commerce Director Denise Wilkinson says the event will help out small businesses in Norfolk who are facing difficulties due to COVID-19 shutdowns.

"This is going to help our businesses, which are struggling," Wilkinson said. "There's relief packages, there's all kinds of information that we're disseminating, but they're stressed and they need help too, so please frequent your businesses, restaurants, and retail because they're working out all kinds of ways to make it happen."

The cruise will be taking place for the next four Saturdays, and will also include a scavenger hunt beginning at 10:30 AM, where the winner will receive a $50 gift card. Wilkinson says more activities will be added to the cruise events as the weeks continue, and she hopes they will create some enjoyment for the community while they navigate through this difficult time.

"All of us are a little bit frightened and we're staying in our homes, which is unusual for this community," Wilkinson said. "So I'm hoping this will create a little bit of normal, because we want a little bit of fun, so if you get out and participate I think you're going to feel better."
