NEW YORK - A former Sidney High School student earned national honors for his broadcasting work at the University of Nebraska-Kearney on March 7 in New York City.

Austin Jacobsen, a senior sports communication and excise science major, took first place in the "Best Sports Interview" category at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) College Media Awards. The awards program honors campus radio and televisions stations across the country.

More than 3,000 entries from schools, including Division I universities, were submitted for the awards. Finalists represent the top three-percent of the students.

Jacobsen earned the award for his interviews with Lopers head football coach Josh Lynn on the “UNK Coaches Show.”

“We all strive to be the best,” Jacobsen said. “I’m glad we had this great opportunity to interview and get to know coach Lynn every week of football season. It shows how great our UNK community is.”

Jacobsen, a six-time nominee, is also one of four finalists for best sports director at a college radio station. The award winner has yet to be announced.

He works part-time for Lexington radio station, KRVN.
