BAYARD, NE - (KNEP) Multiple crews were called Wednesday afternoon to assist with putting out a grass fire.

Just before two this afternoon, scanner reports called in asking for mutual aid to assist with a grass fire that was occurring near Highway 26.

Crews from Minatare, Melbeta, Broadwater, Bridgeport and Gering responded to the scene along Highway 26.

A reporter from NCN news partner NBC Nebraska arrived on scene not long after the initial call was made and notes that the 'smoke could be seen from Scottsbluff.

There was a bit of a struggle while crews arrived on scene. The rough terrain made for a difficult time as the wind-driven fire grew in size.

It is unknown at the moment the extent of the damage, however, cattle that were on the property were moved to a safer location and were not injured in the event.

The fire is still on-going as of 6:00 p.m. and crews are unsure when the fire will be put out.

The strong winds and dry conditions made for the agitated flames but the full cause is still unknown at this time.
