Health Officials: Boys State Basketball Only Open to Family Members

LINCOLN - City of Lincoln health officials are recommending that the Nebraska Boys State Basketball Tournament should be played without spectators that are not immediate family members due to coronavirus fears.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department and city officials held a news Wednesday to make the announcement.
There have been five confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska, and one of those students was a high school-aged male who attended Girls State Basketball last week.
Working media will be allowed to cover the games like normal, so all TV and radio broadcasts will still be on as planned.
The student, who has underlying medical conditions, attended two games last Thursday including the Hartington/Weeping Water game at Lincoln Southwest High School and the Crofton/BRLD game at North Star High School.
The boys tournament is set to begin on Thursday morning. The latest broadcast schedule for News Channel Nebraska can be found here.
According to reports Wednesday, schools will compile a list of family members of athletes and coaches to be allowed into games. No cheerleaders, dance teams, mascots or band members will be allowed. Third place games are still on as planned, and the sportsmanship awards will not be handed out this year.
