OMAHA - In the next-to-last weight class of the day, Beatrice sophomore Trevor Reinke claimed a state title in a thrilling, triple-overtime ultimate tiebreaker over No. 3 Bryce Brown (31-5) of Hastings - an opponent that Reinke had faced and defeated earlier this season in a dual.

"Going into the match, I kind of knew what (Brown) was going to do," Reinke said."

In the ultimate tiebreaker round, there are 30 seconds put on the clock. The wrestler who scored the first points of regulation, which was Reinke, gets to choose their position. Reinke chose the top.

For those 30 seconds of the ultimate tiebreaker round, Reinke needed only to maintain control, and hold his opponent down to claim the win.

Reinke did just that in the 1-1 tie, and became the first Beatrice wrestler to take home the gold since Chance Helmick, who won titles in both 2013 and 2014 in Class B 170.

The state title comes after Reinke medaled 5th last season at state as a freshman. Reinke rounded out his sophomore year at 42-3.

"I figured I'd do whatever I could do stay on top and hold the position," Reinke said after. "It feels amazing. Everybody's excited. I'm pumped. I could go another match."

Meanwhile, Fairbury senior wrestler Seth Firmanik was seeking history when he came to the CHI Health Center this week.

He was looking to become the first Fairbury wrestler since Ross Boeckner in 2002 to bring home a gold medal at state wrestling for the Jeffs.

Even though that didn't happen, Firmanik has still made history.

Firmanik, ranked No. 3 in Class B 195, drew a district final rematch in the gold medal bout, facing No. 1 Eli Jansen (29-4) of Omaha Skutt Catholic. Jansen had pinned Firmanik at district finals in Bennington last weekend in the first period in that gold medal match.

At state, Jansen's pin came in the late in the second period at the 3:28 mark of the match. Jansen's was the 2019 champion at 195 pounds as well.

Firmanik ended his career with 125 total wins - the third most in school his history. He's also just the third wrestler in Jeffs history to medal three times at state.

Firmanik ends the 2020 season with a 45-4 record.

"Seth is a special kid," Fairbury head wrestling coach Derek Garfield said. "Some of those kids come through your program once in awhile. We've had a handful since I've been here. Very fortunate to have a kid of his work ethic and of such high character. He might have missed one practice in four years of high school wrestling."
