Scottsbluff Public Schools reaches settlement brought by former student
SCOTTSBLUFF, NE - Scottsbluff Public Schools has reached a settlement in a case filed by a former student connected to the case of former golf coach Michael Klein.
The school board discussed the matter at its February meeting, according to the school board's meeting agenda.
In a statement to News Channel Nebraska partner NBC Nebraska - Scottsbluff, Scottsbluff Public Schools said, "The settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing by or liability of the Scottsbluff Public Schools. Instead, all parties to the litigation wanted to avoid the costs, expenses and uncertainties of trial."
The statement also says the former student’s name is not being released to protect the identity of the former student and their family. The former student is listed as Jane Doe in court documents.
The payment amount believed to be $1.7 million will be paid by the school district’s risk liability pool, ALICAP, according to the statement. This payment will have no fiscal impact on the Scottsbluff Public Schools' assets, budget or property tax levy.
Klein is currently serving a 24-32 year sentence after being convicted on multiple counts of sexual assault in 2017.
A separate lawsuit was settled in July by Scottsbluff Public Schools in relation to the Klein case for $2.75 million.
