Millard North-North Star Clash to Showcase Top Hoops Talent from Metro and Capital City
OMAHA - "Ohio State, UConn, Creighton, Nebraska, Kansas, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowas State...How many is that?"
And that's only a portion of offers collected by Millard North junior Hunter Sallis, the highest rated and first ever five-star recruit to come out of the Cornhusker state.
Currently tabbed as the nation's 20th prep hoops prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, Sallis is leading the top-ranked Mustangs (19-3) with 22 points per game in addition to averaging five rebounds, four assists and two steals a contest.
However, it's not just Sallis that makes Millard North one of the most talent-rich teams the state has ever seen. The Mustangs proved over the weekend that they can hang with the nation's best, falling by just five-points to IMG Academy at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island.
The Mustang's starting five is rounded out by senior and Stanford commit Max Murrell, sophomore Jasen Green who's already been offered by Nebraska, as well as juniors Saint Thomas and Jadin Johnson who have been getting interest from DI and DII programs as well. Noah Erickson is the Mustangs sixth man, and is going to Wayne State on a full basketball scholarship next year.
"On the floor they've just been a lot of fun trying to mesh all of those talents together," Millard North Head Coach Tim Cannon shared. "Things that we are able to do...a lot of years you're not able to throw it up high and get a dunk like that, and we've had a lot of that..."
Now Tuesday night Millard North will host the highest ranked team from the capital city in Lincoln North Star (15-6). The No. 9 Gators have a division one player of their own in Donovan Williams, who since coming back from a summer ACL injury is averaging 31 points a game.
"Some people could see it as me versus Hunter, or me versus Max Murrell, but I just think it's two great teams going against each other to put on a show for all the fans that are going to be there and all of the coaches that are going to be in attendance," Williams shared. "I just think it's a great opportunity for us to prove ourselves."
Williams, who de-committed from Nebraska after Tim Miles left, has since been offered by Texas and has been contacted by Kansas and Oregon just this week. On February 8th he became just the tenth player to score 50 in Class A game in a 88-91 defeat to No. 2 Bellevue West.
"The thing about Donovan is that he's a closer so when a game gets tight he takes over games and he's very good in that situation," North Star Head Coach Tony Quattrocchi explained. "His legs have come back, his shooting has come back, and his ability to drive to the basket is obviously still there. He's such a strong upper body kid."
Williams and Sallis were asked about each others' game, and both were complimentary, even if there was a little good-natured ribbing thrown in...
"I know he's big... he can shoot, and he's a smart player so I just gotta watch out for those things...Sallis shared."
"He's a great player you know, I'm going to show him I'm the big brother in this conversation so it's going to be fun," Williams added with a smile.
The contest between North Star and Millard North will be broadcast live on News Channel Nebraska starting around 7:10 PM after the conclusion of the girls game.
