GRAND ISLAND - UPDATE:
The Hall County Sheriff's Office has arrested 30-year-old Shane Brethour. He was taken into custody on Tuesday, December 17, one week after police said he stabbed his own dog and threatened a person with a knife. As of Thursday morning, he remains housed in the Hall County Jail.

Court documents said Brethour is facing three felony and three misdemeanor charges. The felony charges are for terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person. The misdemeanor charges are criminal mischief, contributing to the delinquency of a child and cruelly mistreat animal.

Court records also provide more details of the incident that led to Brethour's arrest. An affidavit from police officers say they arrived at a home at 418 West 11th Street around 7:00 a.m. on December 10, 2019, where they made contact with Troy Nelson. Nelson told police that Brethour had come to his house asking for a ride to the Red Coach Inn, so he could get some money from his mother. Brethour was accompanied by an girl believed to be a runaway juvenile.

After denying Brethour a ride, Nelson says they got into an argument. During that argument, Nelson told police that Brethour broke out a back window in his car by hitting it with own head. Brethour then allegedly pulled out a long knife and began approaching Nelson. During that time, a dog owned by Brethour got excited over the commotion and approached Brethour, who then hit the dog in the head with the knife.

Nelson told police that Brethour then continued toward him in a threatening manner, but that he was able to get back into his house to get away from Brethour, who then left the scene with the girl.

The injured dog, which had a four-inch cut on his head, was taken to the Central Nebraska Humane Society where it was cared for. There will be a court hearing December 23 to determine the disposition of the dog, which the state is recommending be made available for adoption.

Brethour was able to avoid arrest the day of the incident. He was arrested Tuesday by Hall County Sheriff's Department officers. A representative from the department told Local4 he was not able to disclose where the arrest took place, but that Brethour was arrested without incident.

Brethour appeared in Hall County court on Wednesday, where his bond was set for $50,000.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 16 at 9 a.m.

Grand Island Police say a man who attempted to kill a dog and possibly attempted to stab a person early Tuesday morning is still at large.

They are looking for Shane Brethour, 30 of Grand Island. They believe he may be armed with a knife. Police described Brethour as a white male, 5'11", around 190 lbs., balding, with tattoos on his hands and neck. Police warn against approaching Brethour, and ask that they be contacted instead.

Police were called around 7:00 Tuesday morning and say Brethour is suspected of injuring a dog with a knife at 418 West 11th street in north Grand Island. He's also suspected of threatening a resident at that address.

GIPD Captain Jim Duering said Brethour, armed at the time with a knife, fled the scene.

As a result, authorities advised the Grand Island Public School District of the situation.

From there, the district announced around 7:40 a.m.that until further notice several elementary schools will be going into a lockout situation.

The schools impacted were Lincoln, Howard, Jefferson and Knickrehm elementary schools.

GIPS staff were at school doors allowing students into the building. No parents were allowed to enter until the lockout was lift around 9:45 a.m.

Trinity Lutheran School was also placed in a lockout status for a short time Tuesday.

Police say Brethour may be in the company of a 15 year old runaway juvenile. He was observed wearing brown coveralls.
