Zoo Saddened By Loss of Giraffe Matriarch
OMAHA - Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has announced the death of it's oldest giraffe.
In a news release, zoo officials say that 26-year-old Daisy died Wednesday. Daisy is the oldest giraffe ever to live at Omaha’s Zoo and Aquarium.
The average life expectancy for a female giraffe is about 22 years.
Daisy was born in 1993, and has been a resident of the zoo since 1994.
After assessing her quality of life with severe degenerative joint disease and weight loss, the decision to humanely euthanize Daisy was made by the Zoo’s animal health team.
Daisy was a Reticulated Giraffe, one of four giraffe species that are listed as endangered.
