PLATTE COUNTY - Drivers beware: If you plan on driving around Platte County this holiday season, make sure you do it while sober.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office is one of several agencies across the state participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Campaign.

From Dec. 13 through Jan. 1, the sheriff's office will have deputies working extra hours on weekends, evenings and special events.  They'll be focusing on alcohol-impaired drivers and other traffic-related violations.

Sheriff Ed Wemhoff said he hopes the extra presence will deter folks from drinking and driving.

“If we can be more visible to the public, maybe that will be something that makes them think twice when they decide maybe later that evening to get behind a steering wheel,” Wemhoff said.

The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety is making the campaign possible by providing grants to participating law enforcement agencies so they can pay their staff for the extra hours.
