Sidney advances to second state championship in four years
Sidney will go for their first state championship in school history on Friday night at 7 p.m.
CEDAR RAPIDS - Senior Kelsey Hobbie finished with 19 kills and three blocks, senior Maddy Duncan had a career-high 16 kills, and the No. 1 Sidney volleyball team advanced to the Class 1A State Championship with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-16, 25-17 victory over North Tama Thursday night in Cedar Rapids.
Duncan also added two ace serves and 10 digs. Senior Presley Brumbaugh chipped in 10 kills and 15 digs. Senior setter Olivia Larsen had a season-best 47 assists. Junior Paige Smith set a career-best with 16 digs.
The Cowgirls held the Redhawks to just .148 hitting.
Sidney (37-6) will go for their first state volleyball championship in school history on Friday night at 7 p.m. They'll meet No. 6 Wapsie Valley (25-15), who upset four-time defending state champions No. 3 Janesville in the quarterfinals, 3-1, and swept No. 7 Holy Trinity Catholic, 3-0, in the semifinals Thursday.
The Cowgirls make their second appearance in the state final. In 2015, they lost to Janesville, 3-1.
