Tri County scores upset over Southern in opening round of Class D1 playoffs Thursday

WYMORE - The Tri County football team (6-3) scored a big upset win in the first round of the Class D1 state football playoffs on Thursday.
The No. 11-seed Trojans downed No. 6 seed Southern, 40-12, at Arbor State Park in Wymore.

Junior quarterback Cole Siems had a huge night for the Trojans, completing 10-of-15 passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 22 times for 133 yards and two scores.
Tri County rushed for 285 yards as a team. Southern struck first, leading 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Trojans scored 20 points in the second quarter and 14 more in the third to take control.
Southern is now 0-8 all time in state playoff games. Brayden Klover and Peyton Salts each had rushing touchdowns for the Raiders.
Tri County will face No. 3 seed Elmwood Murdock (8-1) in the second round on Wednesday at a time to be determined. Elmwood-Murdock will be the home team.
Elmwood-Murdock smothered East Butler Thursday, 74-16.
