Water to be pumped into the Platte River

NORTH PLATTE - Kent Miller with the Twin Platte Natural Resources District said water from the Nebraska Cooperative Republican Platte Enhancement Project will be pumped into the Platte River to continue providing irrigation water to Nebraskans beginning in January.
He said there is a cooperation between natural resource districts to make the water pumping possible.
NCORPE water will provide 5,600 acre feet of water to the Platte River this upcoming year.
"You won't see a whole lot of difference," said Miller, "We'll be putting in between five and 10 cubic feet per second and the river behind me [today] is probably flowing 1000-2000 CFS so it's a very small amount, but over a period of time and over the year it'll be 5,600 acre feet and that is significant for the state protected flows."
The water will be pumped in via a pipeline east of the city of North Platte.
Miller said they have measures in place to protect the ground water aquifer.
The pumping of the water will be begin in January and will continue each month in 2020.
