COLUMBUS - On Thursday, dozens of parents and their kids turned out to the annual Downtown Trick Or Treat.

Kids didn't have to wait until Halloween dress up and receive candy.

The public library, police, state patrol and firefighters were among those handing out treats.

The Downtown Business Association, which hosts the event, said it puts it on to give parents and their kids an alternative to Halloween.

“It’s safe and there’s a lot of parents that just don’t feel real comfortable in having their kids go out trick-or-treating on the 31st with everything that’s been happening,” coordinator Barb Sedlick said.

Parents who attended said that's why they like it.

“It makes it convenient and it feels a lot safer too," Shamika Zachary said.  "It’s nothing we have to worry about, you know?  These are all local people.”

If you missed out, have no fear.

This Saturday, the Columbus YMCA is hosting its Halloween Family Night.  It will include a cookie contest, costume contest and what organizers are calling a jelly bean Fear Factor.

“Jelly beans where you’re not sure what they taste like," Chrissy Zuerlein said.  "It could either taste like popcorn or something nasty, so it’s kind of like a guessing game for the kids but also they get to try new things.”

Afterward, kids will get to watch a movie in the pool.

The event costs $10 per family and you don't have to be a YMCA member.
