Columbus Residents Walk 'Out of Darkness' for Suicide Prevention
Hundreds showed up Saturday afternoon in Pawnee Park for the first-ever American Foundation for Suicide Prevention "Out of Darkness" community walk in Columbus.
The World Health Organization estimates that around 800,000 people die from suicide each year, but events like the "Out of Darkness" walk held in Columbus over the weekend are hoping to change that.
Hundreds showed up Saturday afternoon in Pawnee Park for the first-ever American Foundation for Suicide Prevention "Out of Darkness" community walk in Columbus.
The event was held by the Foundation to raise funds for educational programs, federal research, and more as part of an effort to lower the annual number of suicides by 20 percent by the year 2025.
However, the brand new event was not just a fundraiser, it was also a place for people to find support and comfort in the community around them.
"We want to provide support for people who need it," Cynthia Makovicka, Co-Chair of the walk, said. "If you have lost someone to suicide or if you struggle yourself with suicide, here you will find common support and somebody who understands."
Families and friends wore t-shirts, stickers, signs, and necklaces as they walked to honor and support loved ones who struggle with or who were lost to suicide.
The walk was an emotional time for many who attended, but it also offered hope, awareness, and a helping hand to those in emotional distress or those considering suicide.
Emily Mach, another Co-Chair for the event along with Makovicka both say people with depression, anxiety, or those who are considering suicide are not alone.
"There are people out there just like you. You are not alone," Mach said.
All funds earned at the event will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and their efforts in ending suicide in Nebraska and across the United States.
