Northeast Nebraska Families and Friends Walk to Fight Against ALS
The wind, cold, or even the rain could not stop these people from going out and supporting a cause that is important to them and the ones they love.
People from Norfolk, Columbus, and other communities in northeast Nebraska gathered at Skyview Park in Norfolk on Sunday for the 2019 Norfolk & Columbus Area Walk.
The event is held every year to raise money and awareness for people in the Midwest who have ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that has no known cause or cure.
The Area walk is put on by ALS in the Heartland, an organization that broke away from the nationwide ALS Association to focus on people in Nebraska and the Midwest.
“ALS in the Heartland was formed 13 years ago when we chose to break away from the ALS Association so that 100 percent of every dollar raised can stay here in Nebraska and western Iowa," Executive Director of ALS in the Heartland Tammy Stalzer said.
“We raise funds and awareness so that people know they are not alone in this fight with ALS.”
Families, friends, and loved ones at the event used signs, balloons, and t-shirts to honor those who are living with or have passed away from ALS.
The event serves as a time for people to get together, remember, and support those affected by ALS.
“All of the funds raised here today will go to ALS in the Heartland so that we can help those living with ALS, honor those we’ve lost to ALS, and hope for a cure for this terrible disease," Stalzer said.
