BEATRICE – Going into its last five years of active use, the Beatrice landfill southwest of the city is coming off a good year, from a revenue standpoint.
Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency officials are preparing for opening a new site, sometime likely around 2026.

In the meantime, Landfill Superintendent Jason Moore says the current facility continues to use a gap between cells, called a piggyback site…where garbage being dumped is surrounded by area now planted to wheat. Moore says that cover is helping to control moisture in what has been a very wet year.
Because of a plentiful rain, Moore says the facility has spent more on rock than it probably has in the past three years combined.

The bottom of the piggyback cell has a drainage system that transports water and leachate to holding ponds, constructed nearby.
The planting of wheat or other cover on areas not being used for piling refuse, also provides habitat area.

The Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency landfill, in the past few years, began using a large garbage compacting machine, rather than the process of baling garbage.
Just to the south of the landfill, is a construction and demolition waste site, which has a lot of life left…only using the first of six separate areas. To the west of that…..is 80 acres acquired by the City of Beatrice many years ago…..where the new landfill will be constructed.

The Beatrice Landfill has picked up new municipal customers from the State of Kansas, and Moore says the operation is always working toward finding new municipalities or counties to utilize the facility, which improves the revenue picture of the operation.

The Beatrice Landfill now counts customers from parts of nine counties.
