Archbishop Bergan stifles Wilber-Clatonia in second half

FREMONT - The Archbishop Bergan defense held Wilber-Clatonia to just 45 total yards and six points in the second half, and the Class C2 No. 7 Knights remained unbeaten with a 23-21 win over the Wolverines Friday night in Fremont.
Bergan forced three turnovers - two interceptions and a fumble recovery - in the second half after giving up 196 yards of total offense in the first half and trailing 15-10 at the break.
Senior quarterback Jake Ridder scored two of his three touchdowns in the second half. Both scores came on running plays from one and 25 yards out. He also connected with Dylan Marchand on an eight-yard touchdown pass on the Knights' opening drive. The three-year starter was 11-22 for 131 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also added 68 yards rushing on 13 attempts.
Ridder' top target was senior receiver Jackson Gilfry. He finished with four catches for 51 yards.
Senior running back Ethan Villwok, who placed third at the Class C State Wrestling Tournament last season, rushed for 90 yards on 25 carries.
Bergan finished with 290 yards of total offense. Wilber-Clatonia had 241 yards of total offense.
Junior I-back Mitchell Thompson led the Wolverines with 67 yards rushing on 12 carries. He scored a rushing touchdown on their first possession of the game, giving Wilber-Clatonia the lead at 8-7 after a two-point conversion.
Freshman quarterback Coy Rosentreader and senior wingback Tad Moldenhauer each added rushing scores.
The Knights even the series at one a piece. This was the second ever meeting between the two teams. The Wolverines won last year's matchup, 38-14.
The last time Wilber-Clatonia was 1-2 through three games was in 2007. They finished 4-4 and it was the last time the Wolverines did not qualify for the postseason. They've made the playoffs 11 consecutive seasons.
Archbishop Bergan (3-0) is on the road next Friday at Stanton. Wilber-Clatonia returns home to play another Class C2-2 district foe, Louisville.
