ASA Entertainment stops at Beatrice High to share cool stunts, anti-bullying message
BEATRICE - There was some high flying action at the O-Zone Monday afternoon, but it wasn't your typical basketball or volleyball game.
Students from Beatrice and Southern Public Schools in Wymore packed the stands for an eye-popping performance from ASA Entertainment - a stunt group that travels the nation, sharing various messages with young audiences. Their high school tour focuses on anti-bullying.
BHS assistant principal Philip Voigt was one of the first administrators in the state to book the group.
"It would be a unique way to reach some students," Voigt thought. "Someone just standing on a stage and giving facts wouldn't get to them. If we were addressing their interests and doing it in an exciting way, that's a way to start that conversation (about bullying)."
Jared Wiedower, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has performed with ASA off and on for the past three years, and he’s only been out of high school for just over one.
He says he was bullied at his hometown high school, and wants to advocate for change by doing what he loves most.
"That fed the fire of me wanting to show people what BMX is about," Wiedower said. "Spread the word to end the word. Get rid of bullying. I'm sick of it...not cool."
Wiedower and several other performers did all sorts of flips, tricks and stunts on their BMX bikes, and as usual, nothing topped the grand finale.
After searching the crowd for volunteers, Voigt was picked to sit on a chair placed on top of a ramp. While sitting there, Wiedower did a full 360-degree flip in the air. The front tire came within a few inches of Voigt's face, though he said it wasn't that bad.
Either way, Voigt was glad to have ASA at Beatrice to help spread a positive message to students.
"Ultimately, this is about getting kids to start thinking about how we treat each other," Voigt said, "and if I have to put myself on stage and have a BMX bike come within a few inches of my face to get the conversation started, then that's what we'll do."
