SOUTH SIOUX CITY - A South Sioux City police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing from a May shooting.
According to the Associated Press, a grand jury cleared Officer Brian Van Berkum in a ruling on Friday. The decision stems from an incident in May where Van Berkum confronted Luis Quinones Rosa outside of a bar because Rosa matched the description of a man who had been seen with a gun.
Investigators say that Rosa shot first at Van Berkum, striking him in a leg and abdomen. Van Berkum returned fire, hitting Rosa in a leg, and Rosa was found unresponsive in a nearby vehicle.
Rosa was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Van Berkum underwent surgery, and has since recovered and returned to work.
