Former Peru State QB, Dan Boshart, to Attend Campbell Trophy Summit
By: Peru State Athletics
PERU - The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that 214 previous nominees for The William V. Campbell Trophy® have accepted invitations to attend the Third Annual Campbell Trophy® Summit, sponsored by Intuit Inc., at Stanford University in California.
Peru State's Dan Boshart (Wood River) will be among the 214 former collegiate football players in attendance. While the majority of the former players planning to attend are from the 2000's, there are several others from the 80's and 90's who will be in attendance. It appears Boshart is just one of three with Nebraska ties who will be in attendance. Two former Huskers Mark Pelini (2014) and Pat Tyrance (1990) will also be in Stanford. While the majority of those attending will be from NCAA DI programs, there are other from NCAA DII, NCAA DII, and a few from the NAIA.
Boshart, who will be student teaching and helping coach football this fall at Gibbon High School, is excited about this opportunity. So were the Gibbon administration and Peru State student teaching officials. They encouraged Boshart to attend prior his starting of student teaching.
About the experience, Boshart stated, "It's a real honor to be included in this opportunity. For many of us student-athletes, this is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I'm grateful to be able to attend the Summit. I'm looking forward to hearing from successful business leaders across America and learning about their habits and tips that have made them successful.
The 2019 event, which will take place Aug. 14-17, will provide a powerful opportunity for the members of the Campbell Trophy® community to interact and learn from many of the nation's top entrepreneurs and Silicon Valley CEOs about the lessons that have guided them to the highest levels of success. The event will also include a career expo with more than a dozen companies on site recruiting the attendees. Organized as a tribute to the late Bill Campbell, the award's namesake, the event serves as a vehicle for the many leaders impacted by Campbell to pass on his insights for leadership and personal growth to the next generation.
"Bill was absolutely passionate about football, and he believed deeply in what you learned from playing the game," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "He never, never took his foot off the accelerator in talking about the benefits of the game. So, we are really thankful that Intuit has stepped forward to fund the summit for a third year as a tribute to Bill's legacy of mentoring. We received amazing feedback from the participants who attended the first two Summits, and more than 50 percent are coming back. The Summit has quickly become its own community, and it's a great showcase for the impact college football has in creating educational opportunities for those who play our sport."
Campbell, who played and coached at Columbia before a switch to the business world, became one of the most influential individuals in Silicon Valley as CEO and Chairman of Intuit and a board member of Apple and Google. He developed a unique reputation, earning the moniker as the "Coach of Silcom Valley" for using the lessons of the gridiron as he mentored Steve Jobs of Apple, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt of Google, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, Scott Cook and Brad Smith of Intuit, and countless others.
"It's a real honor to be here, and to pay tribute to the man that this trophy is named after," said Intuit Chairman and CEO Brad Smith in addressing the attendees at the 2018 event. "It's a great honor to speak to you because you have been recognized as someone who carries his name with distinction. That individual is Bill Campbell.... This is the must-attend event in Silicon Valley, and I can attest to that because I have had multiple people ask me how they can buy a ticket, but that is what makes this event so special you can't buy your way here. You have to earn your way here, and everyone in this room has done just that."

The captain of Columbia's 1961 Ivy League championship team, Bill Campbell found his true calling after an unlikely career change at age 39 from football coach to advertising executive. His ability to recruit, develop and manage talented executives - all lessons learned on the gridiron - proved to be a critical component of his ability to inspire his business teams to the highest levels of success.
Campbell joined the NFF Board in 1978 while he was still a coach at Columbia, and he continued to serve with distinction until his passing in 2016. In 2004, the NFF recognized Campbell's contributions and accomplishments by presenting him with the NFF Gold Medal, the organization's highest honor. In 2009, the NFF renamed college football's premier scholar-athlete award as The William V. Campbell Trophy® in his honor.
Celebrating the 30th presentation in 2019 as one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, the trophy identifies one individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Made of 25-pounds of bronze and 24-inches in height, the trophy is currently displayed at its official home inside the New York Athletic Club and accompanied by a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. Fidelity Investments serves as a proud partner of both the Campbell Trophy and the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The centerpiece to the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, the Campbell Trophy®was first presented in 1990 and adds to the prestige of the program, which was launched in 1959 as the first initiative in history to award postgraduate scholarships based on a player's combined academic, athletic and community accomplishments. The program has awarded $11.5 million to 854 top athletes since its inception, and it currently distributes around $300,000 each year. Coupled with the money distributed by its local chapters, the NFF has distributed more than $32 million.
