SCHUYLER - A traveling war memorial has made its way to Schuyler, but with a different twist than one which was recently in the area.
The national Remembering Our Fallen memorial stopped in Columbus earlier this month, but a Nebraska-specific version is currently on display at VFW Post 4836 in Schuyler. VFW Commander Don Eckstein says that the memorial was created in order to pay respects to those Nebraskans who gave their lives in the War on Terror.
"It took 50 years for people to honor the Vietnam veterans, so instead of waiting 50 years, and not honoring these young men and women, it was decided to build this wall," Eckstein said. "We should honor the people who sacrificed their lives for freedom."
The overall inspiration for Remembering Our Fallen came from a Nebraska father who felt that his son, SGT. Joshua Ford, had been forgotten. The memorials are created by Patriotic Productions, and 15 state-specific memorials travel their respective states, and the national version began traveling in August 2017.
States that have memorials include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. The Nebraska display will be available in Schuyler until Sunday, August 4th, and is open daily from 12:00 - 7:00 PM until then.
