COLUMBUS - It might be a few weeks before school starts, but a Columbus organization got both kids and parents ready with a night of fun and education.

The Platte County Time For Change coalition held its annual Back to School Bash at Ag Park on Monday evening. The T4C group aims to unite youth, families, and community partners in the prevention of youth involved in gangs.

The event included games and face painting for children, while the parents took in a presentation from CMS School Counselor Angie Kruse, who spoke about the 40 Developmental Assets framework. The Search Institute has identified 40 positive supports and strengths that young people need to succeed, with half of the assets focusing on the relationships and opportunities they need in their families, and the remaining assets focusing on social-emotional strengths.

Kruse also spoke about how important it is for parents to challenge their children to help them develop a more productive lifestyle.

"We want our kids to do better, so we need to make sure our children can adjust to things well, they become resilient," Kruse said. "We want them to have the ability to stay focused on their goals so they can achieve in life, and by challenging your kids it also reduces their alcohol and tobacco use."

The event also included a school supply giveaway, and the first 50 participants received a free backpack to help them get ready for the school year.
