FAIRBURY - The city of Fairbury is celebrating its 150th birthday in 2019.

That celebration will reach its peak with a weekend celebration on Sept. 14-15 in the downtown square.

The Fairbury Community Foundation, along with committee members from other organizations around town, have been planning this event since October.

The weekend festival will feature a beer garden, live music, kids' games, a movie at the Bonham Theatre, a corn hole tournament and more.

Festivities wrap up on Sunday, Sept. 15 with the Fairbury City Museum's 8th Annual Car show.

"Everybody I've talked to is happy about it," said Don Cook, president of the Fairbury Community Foundation. "They're excited that the car show will be down at the town square. I think there's more availability for more cars to be involved in it when it's down there, so I think it's a really good thing for the community."

Cook also says that Stone Hollow Brewery in Beatrice has come up with a special "Fairbury beer" for the occasion. It will go on sale on Sept. 14 at the beer garden, which will be located on E Street.

The Community Foundation is also selling commemorative beer mugs and engraved railroad spikes converted into bottle openers on their website to celebrate the occasion.

On Tuesday night, the Fairbury City Council approved a special designated liquor license for the event on Sept. 14. Cook says wine coolers and beer will be served, but not distilled spirits.

The streets on the downtown square will also barricaded off for much of the day on the 14th and 15th.

On the night of the 14th, Nebraska will host Northern Illinois at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Cook says the Bonham Theatre will be showing that game for free that night.
