The goal of this traveling memorial is simple. Never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

"I think that as Americans we need to remember to be proud and thankful for our freedoms by remembering these men and women," memorial organizer Noala Fritz said.

Fritz’s son lost his life while serving and is one of the about 5,100 pictured on the memorial. She now travels across the country with the display to keep the memories of these service men and women alive.

"Every time that I see these visitors to the memorial, I know in my heart that they're going to remember and think upon those that we lost," Fritz said.

Fritz is a member of the group called Gold Star families. Gold Star Families are those who have lost a loved one since the September 11th attacks. Some of those families were in attendance for a ceremony Sunday.

"There is an unspoken bond between us," Fritz said. "This is not a group that any of us ever wanted to become a part of, but when they leave, I get another hug."

The memorial will be in Columbus until Wednesday, July 10, and is located at the Columbus Armed Forces Reserve Center. The display is open to the public and all are encouraged to come honor those on the memorial.

"All of those that are here on these towers died in different actions and different places, but they're all resting here together and are going to be remember here united."

The display is open from 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It is open on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to noon. According to Fritz, after the display leaves Columbus it will not return to Nebraska until October.
