NEBRASKA CITY – Janet Palmtag of Nebraska City announced her candidacy for the Nebraska Legislature on Friday morning.

A press release says Palmtag has the endorsement of former Gov. Dave Heineman and Congressman Jeff Fortenberry for the legislative district that includes Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee and Richardson counties.

Palmtag, a small business owner, said its important to champion legislation that helps  farmers, businesses and families succeed.

Palmtag: “I am running for the legislature to strengthen the quality of life in communities across southeast Nebraska. Farmers and ranchers across the district and state are struggling and need help now.  Property tax reform is needed to stabilize and strengthen our farms, downtown businesses and families.”

She called agriculture  Nebraska’s biggest economic engine and said the state needs a legislature that supports the ag economy.

Palmtag:  “I have experienced first-hand the struggles of businesses and entrepreneurs in our ag-dependent communities.”

The press release lists expanding rural broadband, workforce housing and housing affordability as keys to her campaign.

Palmtag:  “I am grateful to the many residents of southeast Nebraska who have encouraged me to represent them in the Legislature and get things done. My husband John and I have raised three wonderful children with the help of our schools and community and I will passionately represent the people of southeast Nebraska.”

In addition to having the support of Heineman and Fortenberry, Palmtag announced the following endorsements as she begins her campaign: former State Sen. Roger Wehrbein, The Hon. Randall L. Rehmeier and Candace Rehmeier, former Mayor Jack Hobbie and Peggy Hobbie, Doug Friedli, Gloria Glover, Jim Kuhn, Vaughn Hammond and Beth Hammond of Nebraska City; Richard Halbert, Don Ferguson and Becky Cromer of Falls City; Jay Longinaker and Lora Damme of Talmage; Jan Wright, John Lauber and Mary Lauber of Brownville; and Carolyn Gigstad of Syracuse.

“I am humbled by the support of these great leaders,” concluded Palmtag.

Palmtag was born and raised in Nebraska City and graduated from Lourdes Central Catholic School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and loved taking post-graduate courses in art from Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska.

 She is a Past State President of the Nebraska REALTORS® Association, served as a Commissioner on the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission, a Commissioner for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, a board member of the Nebraska City Veterans Building Project, and the Brownville Concert Series. She is a past member of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation among other community groups. Palmtag is the founder of J.J. Palmtag Realty, which has offices in Nebraska City, Auburn and Rock Port, Missouri. 

Janet is married to John Palmtag. They have three children and two grandchildren.

The 2020 Primary election will be on Tuesday, May 12 with the General Election to follow on Tuesday, November 3.
