BEATRICE - It's not exactly what anyone was wishing for……more flooding in southeast Nebraska.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Friday morning, in southeast Nebraska…..and just before eight a.m., issued a flood warning on the Big Blue River, in Beatrice.
Thanks to a string of strong thunderstorms overnight, two to four inches of rain was recorded in some areas of the river basin. The weather prompted numerous severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings for some southeast Nebraska counties, where radar indicated rotation that could result in formation of tornadoes.
The Big Blue in Beatrice rose to 17-and-a-half feet just before eight a.m……a half-foot below flood stage. City officials announced they were closing Memorial Driver along the banks of the river.
Barring repeated heavy bouts of rain…..the flooding on the Big Blue in Beatrice is expected to be of short duration. Minor lowland flooding is expected……as the river goes about a half-foot above flood stage.
As of early Friday, nearly two-and-quarter inches of rain had fallen in Beatrice….with reports of three-and-a-half to four inches of rain near Lewiston, Virginia, Elk Creek and Tecumseh. Storms also carried quarter-sized hail, overnight.
A flood warning was also issued for the Little Nemaha River in southeast Nebraska and for several streams in southwest Iowa. That doesn't count the Missouri River, which continues above flood stage.
