COLUMBUS - The Platte County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the identity of the Lake North/Lake Babcock drowning victim.

The sheriff's office says that deputies responded to the waterway around 10:30 AM on Sunday to a call about a possible drowning. Upon arrival, it was learned that one person had fallen into the water, and that a second person went in to attempt to get the first one out.

19-year-old Nicholas Rodriguez of Wayne drowned while attempting to assist his friend, and nearby witnesses were able to rescue the first person from the lake. The body was recovered around 5:00 PM from Lake Babcock.

Columbus Fire and Rescue, the Platte County Sheriff's Dive Team, the Waterloo Fire and Rescue Department, and Nebraska Game and Parks all responded to the call. The incident is currently under investigation by the sheriff's office.
