Omaha, NE.-Seven months after Omaha's Yale Park Apartments were shut down in the face of two-thousand code violations, Omaha has a new anti-slumlord ordinance, sort of.

In an unexpected move Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has decided not to veto the plan, announcing an unusual compromise with City Council President Ben Gray.

Last week the council narrowly approved a move calling for mandatory apartment inspections every 10 years.

Following the vote the Omaha World-Herald reported that Stothert promised a veto arguing it would require the hiring of five additional housing inspectors and accomplish nothing.

Which brings us to the Stothert-Gray compromise: The city-wide inspections were scheduled to start in January but if the council goes along those inspections will be delayed for two years so that properties with known code violations can be checked and re-checked during those initial 24 months.

Gray tells News Channel Nebraska other changes to the new ordinance are also possible.

Of course all these changes depend on a majority of the seven-member council agreeing and Gray says that may take several months to work out.
