KIMBALL -- Colin Houk of Scottsbluff was arrested Monday for possession of a controlled substance and later charged with a felony possession.

Kimball County Sheriff David Hottell said Houk was headed to Colorado when he was pulled over by a deputy for speeding. A little while later, the same deputy pulled him over again and upon further discussion, Houk admitted to being in possession of illegal substances.

After searching the vehicle, the deputy found about 1.5 pounds of marijuana and products containing THC, including rice crispy treats, wax and vape cartridges.

In Nebraska, over 1 pound is a felony charge, over 1 ounce is a misdemeanor, and less than an ounce is a citation.

Houk is out on bond and will be arraigned April 24.

“As for law enforcement, if you took alcohol and drugs out, we wouldn’t have much to do,” Hottell said. “A lot of these people say they tried it once, and they’re hooked. For young kids that’s pretty serious. They can end up in jail because they tried it one time and their life changes. In Kimball County, we have a long way to go, but we are making headway. Our [police department] are doing what we can to get [illegal substances] off the streets. “
