FAIRFIELD - The 12-0 Stanton Mustangs are on their way to the Class D1 State Championship game for the first time in nearly 20 years after surviving Sandy Creek 48-36 Friday night.
Mustangs QB Barrett Wilke's 275 rushing yard and five touchdowns led the way, while the Stanton defense came up clutch when it mattered most, intercepting the Cougars inside the Stanton 5 yard line late in the game to end a Sandy Creek touchdown drive.
Becker Pohlman chipped in 81 yards on the ground, and Mitchell Hupp hauled in a 17-yard scoring pass from Wilke, as the Mustangs snapped a 36-36 4th quarter tie and won going away.
Stanton will meet Exeter-Milligan-Friend for the whole D1 ball of wax Monday, November 20 at 10:15am.
