YORK - On a rainy Friday night in York, Nebraska, two of Class B's best teams faced off in a Week 5 battle - and from start to finish, it was the #2 Waverly Vikings giving the #5 York Dukes a goose egg to spoil homecoming.

The Vikings entered the game with a 4-0 record while the Dukes came in at 3-1, with the only defeat coming from the top ranked Bennington Badgers.

The defenses for both Waverly and York stood tall in the first few possessions, but it was the Vikings that capitalized first. York sophomore quarterback Emmitt Dirks threw a pass into the rainfall that was intercepted by Waverly's Garrett Rines.

Rines returned the interception to the 12-yard line and just a few plays later, Nolan Maahs pushed his way in for the opening touchdown.

With Waverly up 7-0, York tried to answer back, but struggled to catch passes in the weather.

The Vikings moved down the field near the end of the second quarter and Aden Smith punched his way to the goal line to increase the Waverly lead to 14-0.

York had an opportunity to score before halftime, but a few more offensive miscues left the Dukes scoreless.

At the start of the 3rd quarter, Waverly's Evan Kastens pooch kicked the opening boot and it was recovered by the Vikings.

Waverly would drive down the short field and add yet another touchdown, once more from Aden Smith.

York moved the football yet again, but could not finish by putting the ball in the endzone.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Waverly led 21-0 over York.

The Vikings would tack on yet another touchdown from Aden Smith to increase the lead to 28-0 as York was left struggling to find the endzone.

A final turnover on downs for York allowed Waverly to run out the clock and give the Vikings a shutout victory over a top 5 opponent.

Waverly's Aden Smith ran for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win, while Evan Kastens ran for another 64 and hauled in 69 yards through the air.

In the loss, Emmitt Dirks threw for 131 yards and an interception, while also running for a team-high 38 yards.

Waverly will put their 5-0 record on the line next week against #7 Scottsbluff, while York drops to 3-2 and will take on Gretna East next week.
