HASTINGS, Neb. -- A former Hastings City Council member has thrown his hat into the ring for a soon-to-be open seat in the Nebraska Legislature.

On Monday, business owner Paul Hamelink announced his candidacy for Nebraska Legislative District 33, currently held by term-limited Senator Steve Halloran. Hamelink owns cigar lounges in both Hastings and Norfolk.

“As a man of faith, I truly believe we are called to do everything in our power to help our community thrive and prosper,” Hamelink said in a press release. “I believe Nebraska – Central Nebraska especially – is at a crossroads. Our district and region deserve a fierce representative who shares our conservative values and is ready to face our biggest hurdles head-on. I will bring my deep experience as a small business owner and my background and knowledge serving our community to Lincoln to help solidify a positive future for generations of Nebraskans.”

Hamelink’s has served on the Hastings City Council, Hastings Planning Commission, Hastings Chamber of Commerce, and Hastings Noon Rotary. He also owns and operates Paul's Cigar Lounge with his wife, Sandra.
