EWING, Neb. -- After a controversial finish to Elgin Public-Pope John and Summerland on Thursday, Feb. 9, the NSAA said they’re ready to move on after speaking with all parties involved.

With less than a minute to go in the game, the wrong Summerland player went to the free throw line after an over-the-back foul. The game finished 46-45, Summerland.

"It doesn't appear there was anything sinister or nefarious," said Nate Neuhaus, NSAA assistant director and supervisor of officials.

The NSAA said that in instances like this, no one is solely to blame, and the main goal should be ensuring that this type of officiating error doesn’t occur in the future.

"It's a slippery slope when you start pointing fingers," he said. "You just have to have a conversation with the school, with the officials to do what's right in education-based athletics."

The NSAA said they put great emphasis on maintaining fair and correctly officiated games to the best of their ability, but that some mistakes are inevitable.

"We do take these things very serious," he said. "But mistakes will happen. They're humans just like everyone else."
