CHADRON, Neb. -- The Pine Ridge Reservation man charged with wounding another man during a June argument at Sheridan County Livestock in June has formally pleaded not guilty to six felony counts.

44-year-old Gilbert Grooms was arraigned Tuesday in Sheridan County District Court on single counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and terroristic threats plus three counts of felony use of a firearm.

Grooms remains free on 10 percent of his $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court for a status hearing on Nov. 8. Assistant Attorney General Doug Warner is leading the prosecution as a Special County Attorney.

Court records show Grooms and 35-year-old Charles Winter of Martin had been arguing at the sale barn on June 6th when Grooms got a shotgun from his vehicle and fired it in Winters’ direction.

Winters retreated to his own vehicle as Grooms shot at him several more times before Winters was hit in the torso as he fled around a trailer.

Grooms was arrested at the scene while Winters was taken to Gordon Memorial Hospital, then flown to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.
