Wakefield wins offensive showcase

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield's defense stopped Pender just once all night, but it was when they needed it most.

Pender quarterback Braxton Volk was sacked as time expired, allowing Wakefield to hold on to a wild 64-62 win over the Pendragons.

It was the only drive Pender had that didn't end in a touchdown. 

The game itself saw just one punt total, and 18 of 20 offensive drives end in a touchdown.

Neither team led by more than one score at any point, as the Pendragons and Trojans combined for 929 yards of total offense. 

Wakefield scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:05 to go, as quarterback Cade Johnson hit Caleb Chase on a 30-yd touchdown pass.

Pender drove to Wakefield's eight on the ensuing drive, but the Trojans sacked Volk twice in the final minute to secure the win.

The Pendragons lost despite 356 total yards and eight total touchdowns from senior Quinton Heineman, who tied the school record for rushing touchdowns (5) and receiving touchdowns (3) in a game.

Pender's defense has now given up at least 60 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2018.
