GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - A day Skate Island owner Steve Anderson never believed would happen arrived on Thursday.

Despite Anderson's disbelief, demolition began on the central Nebraska landmark.

“I raised my family in here. My kids were 2 and 4 when I came back to town,” Anderson told news partner KSNB. “It’s something you never expect to ever happen.”

In February of 2021, 75 percent of Skate Island's roof collapsed under snow that had accumulated for weeks. He said, up to that point, he didn't think things could get any worse than the pandemic. The community had rallied behind the business to keep it open.

The land will be put up for sale.
