Norfolk Catholic sweeps Ainsworth in Elkhorn Valley Tournament

The Norfolk Catholic Knights girls and boys team came away with big wins over the Ainsworth Bulldogs in the first round Elkhorn Valley Tournament.

The Norfolk Catholic Knights girls and boys team came away with big wins over the Ainsworth Bulldogs in the first round Elkhorn Valley Tournament. With the wins, both of the Norfolk Catholic teams advance to the championship tomorrow evening.

The tournament tipped off with the Norfolk Catholic-Ainsworth girls matchup, where Ainsworth got out to a lead as big as 12 points in the first half.

Kendyl and Bria Delimont lit it up from beyond the arc for the Bulldogs, knocking down a combined five triples to lead by double digits.

The Knights used a big third quarter, thanks to the scoring from Avery Yosten and tied the game before the end of the quarter. Both teams had a chance to win at the buzzer in the final seconds of the fourth, but the game would ultimately be decided in overtime.

Morgan Miller led the way for the Knights with two big buckets in OT and capping off the come-from-behind win, 53-50.

Avery Yosten led all scoring with 24, while Morgan Miller chipped in 12 for the Knights in the win.

The Bulldogs didn't manage to make a second half three in the loss and were led by Kaitlyn Nelson with 17 points in a great losing effort.

The Norfolk Catholic girls improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Ainsworth girls drop to 4-2.

Norfolk Catholic moves on to the Elkhorn Valley Tournament Championship tomorrow evening.

In the boys game between Norfolk Catholic and Ainsworth, the Knights would not be denied early on.

Norfolk Catholic managed to shut down any offense Ainsworth could muster, using size and speed to power over the Bulldogs 71-31.

Preston Burbach led the way in scoring for the Knights, racking up 14 points, while several other players put up nice scoring numbers as well. Nolan Fennessy had 13, while Brennan Kelly and Kade Pieper put up 10 in the dominant win.

Ainsworth saw scoring from its leader, Carter Nelson, who finished with 13 points. Trey Appelt finished second in scoring with 8 points.

Norfolk Catholic improves to 6-1 on the year and moves on to the Elkhorn Valley Tournament Championship tomorrow, while Ainsworth drops to 4-2 and will play in tomorrows third-place game.
