WNCC women roll past Colorado Northwestern

                TWIN FALLS, Idaho – The 12th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put up 107 points for the second time this season as the Lady Cougars put five in double figures in rolling to an 107-55 win over Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday afternoon in Twin Falls, Idaho.

                The first time they hit 107 points was a week ago Friday when they topped Northwest College with a near-identical score of 107-54.

                The Cougars were led by Ale’Jah Douglas with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor.

                WNCC also saw Payton Fields net 14 points with 13 points apiece from Aminata Zie and Shanti Henry. Henry also had three treys.

                Martrice Brooks also chipped in 11 points in the win.

                WNCC and Colorado Northwestern were back and forth for the first part of the first quarters as the Spartans led 9-8 and then 11-10. It was then the Cougars started to widen the score, going on a 10-0 run to lead 20-11, the last on a Henry 3-pointer. The Cougars led 27-16 after the first quarter.

                The second quarter saw the Cougars score the first eight points on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Fields followed by a trey by Amani Brown. Fields closed off the run with a bucket for a 35-16 lead.

                Colorado Northwestern hit two treys to cut the lead to 37-23, but WNCC went on a 13-3 run to lead 50-26 and led 50-27 at halftime.

                WNCC and Colorado Northwestern traded buckets for the first five minutes of the third quarter. With the score at 60-37 after a Colorado Northwestern trey, WNCC went on a 14-0 run that saw the Cougars lead 86-40 after three periods.

                WNCC widened the lead to 96-43 and led 98-47 on a Genet Mebratu bucket. Breanna Fowler followed with a bucket to give the Cougars the century mark and Yara Garcia closed out the scoring with a bucket for the 107-55 win.

                WNCC shot 49 percent from the field but only 25 percent from beyond the arc at 7-28. Henry led the way with three treys followed by Brown with two.

                Colorado Northwestern finished with nine 3-pointers in the contest and shot 32 percent from beyond the arc and just 28 percent from the field.

                WNCC also had one of its worst shooting performances from the charity stripe, making just 10 of 21.

                WNCC out-boarded the Spartans 67-46. Fields led the team with 10 boards followed by nine from Aminata Zie and six from Rashaan Smith.

                WNCC have a test on Saturday evening as they face No. 19 College of Southern Idaho at 5:30 p.m. After that, the Cougar women will host North Platte Community College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

WNCC men hold off Community Christian 86-77

                TWIN FALLS, Idaho – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team put five players in double figures and held off Community Christian College 86-77 to open the play in the Wright Physical Therapy Shootout in Twin Falls, Idaho, Friday afternoon.

                WNCC will finish play in the shootout when they face the host team College of Southern Idaho Saturday evening.

                WNCC and Community Christian battled early on in the first half as CCC led 4-0 before WNCC took a 5-4 lead on a Carter Brown trey and a bucket by Biko Johnson. CCC came back to lead 6-5 and the final tie of the game was at 8-8.

                That was when WNCC found the shooting touch as WNCC went on a 17-2 run to lead 25-10 . CCC cut the lead to eight points at 29-21 but WNCC came back to lead 35-21 on a Johnson trey.

                CCC came back to gut the lead to 35-28 before WNCC came back on a 7-0 run behind three points from Carl Thorpe and a dunk by Rodney Sawyer for a 42-28 lead.

                CCC cut the lead to single digits one more time at 45-37 before WNCC led 48-39 at halftime.

                CCC scored the first bucket of the second half, but WNCC would go on to push the lead to 70-47.

                That was when the buckets wouldn’t fall for WNCC and CCC made a comeback, slicing the lead to 80-68 and then later to just seven points, 82-75, with 1:30 to play. Agwa Nywesh would hit two free throws with 1:14 to play to extend the lead. CNCC got a bucket, but Mamadou Sow hit a late bucket and the Cougars got the win 86-77.

                WNCC shot 43 percent from the field but were just 21 percent from beyond the arc. CCC shot 39 percent and were 32 percent from beyond the arc. WNCC had just four treys to CCC’s nine.

                WNCC won the rebound battle 63-48. Sawyer and Nywesh led the way with nine boards each with Thorpe pulling down eight and Them Koang with seven.

                Thorpe led the Cougars in scoring with 15 followed by Johnson with 14. Koang tallied 12 while Sawyer and Nywesh each had 10 points.
