OMAHA, Neb. -- November is Native American Heritage Month. In Omaha, UNO kicked off celebrations with a traditional drum group, a food tour, and an educational speaker Dr. Susana Geliga.
Then Friday, the university held an "Indian Taco" event, sharing the history of indigenous foods.
Multicultural outreach coordinator James LaPointe told NCN.
LaPointe, who shares ancestry with the Ponca and Rosebud Tribe --- said the month is valuable for uniting Nebraskans and reminding the state of its origins.
UNO will hold one more heritage celebration on November 15th solely for campus staff and students, at Ramona's Mexican Restaurant.
Above all, LaPointe encourages people to show their appreciation this Native American Month and participate in events, because "Showing up does make a difference — it shows that we’re still here and we appreciate that," he said.
