BEATRICE - Nearing the holiday season, the new leader of the Beatrice Salvation Army says local needs are high, for various types of assistance.
Salvation Army Administrator Hope Foreman-Burris came to Beatrice from the Kansas City area, in August.

"I've seen a significant amount of need here, just since I've been here...since August. Last month alone, we did over 65 food pantries for families. Ever since I got here in August, the need just keeps going up, and up, and up. I have seen a significant number of homeless people here, as well, so we're trying to meet all the needs that we can."

Going into the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, Foreman-Burris says the local Salvation Army is hoping to generate donations locally of $30,000 to $35,000. The organization is planning to get a jump on its annual red kettle campaign, by having bell ringers at some local grocery stores, this Friday.

"..Just because we know a lot of people are going to be out, grocery shopping. And, the need is so great in this community, we need some extra days to raise the funds. But, our big kick-off is the day after Thanksgiving."

Persons can volunteer to be bell ringers by using register-to-ring-dot com….or by calling the Salvation Army Office. Foreman-Burris says any amount of volunteer time is welcome.

She says the organization expects to distribute between 300 to 400 food and toy baskets this holiday season.
