SIDNEY - Winter coats and snow boots may be needed for trick-or-treating on Sunday night.

The National Weather Service office in North Platte continues to track the potential for light accumulating snow on Sunday and Monday across much of western and central Nebraska.

"At this time, the main periods of concern will be early Sunday morning and late Sunday night into Monday," the weather service said in a statement Saturday. "Total snow accumulations for the two days of 1 to 2 inches are likely with locally higher amounts possible across the western Sandhills."

Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Serviced issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Dawes, Box Butte and Sioux counties in the northern Nebraska panhandle. It takes effect at midnight Saturday night and last to 6 p.m. Sunday. Areas in the advisory are expected to receive up to two inches of snow and a thin sheet of ice as well.

They say winds are expected to remain light, so blowing and drifting snow is not anticipated, but slick roads may make for hazardous travel on Sunday and Monday mornings.

According to the weather service, the southern Nebraska panhandle (including Interstate 80 and Highway 30) could receive one to two inches of snow. One to two inches is also common in Oshkosh, Ogallala and Imperial.

Saturday afternoon will see temperatures in the 50s and 60s, before a cold front begins to move from north to south through Wyoming. This will lead to increasing cloud cover during the late afternoon, along with cooler temperatures.

Colder temperatures are expected by Sunday and continuing into early next week. Afternoon highs on Sunday will remain in the 30s, while overnight temperatures headed into Monday will drop into the 20s.
