The GOP race for governor is now a full-fledged family feud.

Statehouse hopeful Charles Herbster firing back at Governor Pete Ricketts today in the aftermath of yesterday's endorsement fight.

It started with former President Donald Trump formally backing Herbster, announcing that the Falls City cattle king would do a "fantastic job" as governor.

Just a bit later Ricketts told the Omaha World-Herald that while he agrees with Trump on many things, he disagrees that Herbster is "qualified to be our next governor."

Today Herbster complained that, "Governor Ricketts is personally attacking me and President Trump's endorsement...I will not get down in the gutter of petty politics and personal attacks."

In today's statement Herbster noted that in 2016 while he and his late wife were supporting Trump for President, "Pete Ricketts' family spent $7.5 million against Donald Trump and his America-First agenda. They buried the hatchet late in the game."

Herbster says he's committed to running a positive race.

Ricketts is term limited, can't run for reelection and for all practical purposes is backing NU Regent Jim Pillen for governor.
