DALTON, NE — Leyton students getting a lesson in safety from local law enforcement.

Friday, the Cheyenne County Sheriff and Nebraska State Patrol teamed up to teach the students the dangers of drug use, underage drinking and the importance of safe driving.

Leyton principal Ryan Plummer says he hopes it makes students more aware of how simple choices could greatly impact them.

"I think awareness, safety awareness, in our community has been an oversight for a little bit of time," Plummer said. "I just want to bring back in the safety of driving, under the influence, while texting, those types of things."

Students went through active demonstrations with drunk goggles and a crash simulator. Police also gave presentations.

Plummer says the day wouldn’t have been possible without them.

"They have that hands on experience, sadly enough, that they have to see these types of accidents," Plummer said. "Having them incorporate that into the presentations they're giving our students is immense, so beneficial."

Authorities hope the proactive approach will help teens make the right choices about their safety in the future.
