NORFOLK, Neb. -- An arrest was made after an armed woman allegedly tried to light the inside of an apartment on fire over the weekend.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 100 block of E. Park Avenue early Saturday. According to a press release issued by Norfolk Police, officers arrived to find a man and a woman engaged in a physical altercation inside the apartment. Officers say the woman had a kitchen knife during the disturbance.

Officers also observed smoke inside the apartment.

After separating the pair, officers spoke with both parties. The man said both people lived inside the apartment and that the woman attempted to start a fire using the stove, several plastic bottles and her own purse.

43-year-old Rita M. Diedrich, of Norfolk, was arrested for first-degree arson. She was housed at the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
