NORFOLK, Neb. -- During Monday's city council meeting, the morning and noon Optimist Clubs of Norfolk recognized a member of the Norfolk Fire Division.
Lt. Bob Nelson of the Norfolk Fire and Rescue was awarded a Respect for Law certificate of appreciation for his continued service to the Norfolk community.
Nelson has been with Norfolk Fire and Rescue since 1988. There he has been a contributing member to emergency medical services, often teaching classes on life-saving techniques like CPR, as well as being the Lieutenant for Norfolk's C-shift of the fire department.
According to a letter from Norfolk Fire Chief Tim Wragge, which was read at the meeting, Nelson had faced two significant health setbacks, which could have led to him leaving the fire service. Despite this, Nelson returned, saying it was the love of his position that had kept him coming back year after year.
"It's been a privilege and a great thing to serve the citizens of Norfolk," Nelson said. "Nobody can be more fortunate to do something that they love. It's a love of what I've been able to do for the city that keeps me going, and I'm not done yet."
