NORFOLK, Neb. -- Liberty Centre Service's eighth annual color run burst into color in the early hours of Saturday.

One-in-four people will be diagnosed with a mental illness, according Liberty Centre Services. "There is no one in our community who is not affected by mental illness," said Patty Skokan, executive director of Liberty Centre Services.

Skokan encourages anyone who needs help to reach out. She hopes the color run this weekend put the topic in more people's minds. It probably did, considering this year saw a record amount of participants, at at least 250.

"We just want to help celebrate recovery," said previous president for Liberty Centre, Joe Ferguson.

Skokan said she didn't originally study mental health, but now working at Liberty Centre Services, she understands the importance of it in Norfolk. It's especially important this year, after the pandemic showed a 30 percent jump in opioid-related overdoses.

For those not up for jogging in the autumn chill, the event offered a silent auction and t-shirts to sell. They hope to raise $25,000 this go-around - going toward resources for their clients - about three to four hundred people a year.

During the run, joggers had colored powder made of corn starch powder thrown at them.
