'Taste of Columbus' to feed community growth
The annual Taste of Columbus fundraiser, going strong for two decades, will benefit Habitat for Humanity -- a particularly in-demand charity this year -- October tenth.
COLUMBUS -- An annual fundraiser -- going strong for two decades -- will be benefiting Habitat for Humanity, October tenth.
"It started 21 years ago as a way to give back to the community," said Dawson Brunswick, president of Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce.
Brunswick said the fundraiser 'Taste of Columbus' picks a charity recipient each year. This go-around, the choice was Habitat for Humanity.
"We're looking forward to helping them develop their new hub 2 subdivision where we're at now," Brunswick said.
The chamber is planning an event with 14 food vendors, a raffle, wine, and more for guests to enjoy.
Last year, the event was only virtual. This year -- the fundraiser will keep that option but is hoping to first sell out all 600 in-person tickets.
It's all part of a larger effort to build Columbus' community as a whole. With a national housing shortage, homes for those in need are in high demand. First Nebraska Bank's Vice President Lynda Lemp said it's a smart investment to help others find a home.
"Habitat has increased the tax base of Columbus, over the ten years of building houses [...] we calculated we added $100,000 to the tax base in Columbus," said Lemp. "And we're providing stability, a clean place to live [...] their children do better in school."
They're hoping to build two homes a year on these empty lots. The project totals $600,000.; all the more reason a fundraiser is needed.
"It's an opportunity for the people of Columbus to socialize, enjoy some wine, and help a great cause," said Chuck Keep, incoming president of Habitat for Humanity. He is hoping for Churches to step in and volunteer, too.
Proceeds from Taste of Columbus will be split with half going to the Chamber of Commerce, and a half going to Habitat for Humanity. You can buy tickets here.
