COLUMBUS -- Congressman Jeff Fortenberry hosted a roundtable in Columbus, Thursday afternoon. He shared his opinion on myriad topics, including the chaos in Afghanistan.
"I think there's a tremendous amount of people that could help our communities in Nebraska," said Phil Raimondo of Behlen Manufacturing at the discussion at Duo Lift, on whether he'd want refugees to fill the labor shortage.
Raimondo was just one of the many businessmen who came with questions about national issues.
Gubernatorial candidate Jim Pillen made an appearance too. Pillen shared that he is disappointed with the decisions of the Biden administration.
"I know of numerous people in our community who have served to make a difference and gave their life. I feel bad for the people and the ones who thought they were making a difference," Pillen said.
Fortenberry said pulling out U.S. troops from Afghanistan sends the wrong message to the world.
U.S. President Joe Biden, during a press conference on Monday, said that on the other hand; the decision to bring troops home was bound to happen eventually.
"I know my decision will be criticized, but I would rather take all that criticism than pass this decision on to another President of the United States," he said.
Fortenberry, though, prefers for the U.S. to have a strong leader relationship with countries like Mexico, Iraq, and Iran.
He also shared his concerns about the infrastructure bill and the ongoing political division. While he said it's hard to have conversations across the table, he noted most people would be surprised with how often those peaceful relationships do happen -- despite different ideologies.
Those in attendance said they realize finding solutions to national issues isn't easy.
"I think there's many many challenges in D.C., and it is a totally different world to be in politics," Raimondo said.
